Reclaim Austrian Citizenship by Descent – Apply Remotely. Reconnect with Your Roots.

If you have Austrian ancestry, you may be eligible to reclaim Austrian citizenship by descent, even if your family left the country generations ago. Austria offers a clear path to citizenship for both standard descent-based claims and those based on historical persecution.

🇦🇹 No residency or language requirement. Application possible from anywhere in the world.

Who Qualifies for Austrian Citizenship by Descent?

✅ You have a direct ancestor who was an Austrian citizen
✅ You can document your family line through birth, marriage, and (if applicable) death certificates for each generation
✅ Your ancestor did not naturalize in another country before the next generation was born
✅ Your family never formally renounced Austrian citizenship

📌 In standard descent cases, eligibility typically extends only one generation back (from Austrian parent to child), unless a legal exception applies.

Special Provision: Citizenship for Victims of Nazi Persecution and Their Descendants (§58c StbG)

In September 2020, Austria enacted a groundbreaking amendment (§58c of the Austrian Nationality Act), allowing individuals whose ancestors were persecuted by the Nazi regime to reclaim citizenship—across multiple generations.

Who Qualifies?

✔ Individuals whose ancestors were Austrian citizens or permanent residents who were forced to flee between 1933 and 1955 due to persecution
Children, grandchildren, great-grandchildren (no generational limit specified)

Special Benefits Under §58c

🟢 Dual citizenship is allowed
🟢 No German language requirement
🟢 No need to live in Austria
🟢 Apply from abroad via an Austrian consulate

💡 This is the only category in which Austria officially allows dual citizenship.

Important Note on Dual Citizenship

Austria does not typically allow dual citizenship. If you're applying for citizenship by descent outside the §58c persecution law, you will generally be required to renounce your current nationality.

Dual citizenship is only permitted for:

  • Descendants of persecuted persons under the 2020 law (§58c)
  • Exceptional cases with special governmental approval
